Banks are financing supplier upgrades to cut Scope 3 emissions
DBS Bank has launched a Green Data Center Retrofit Initiative, targeting energy-efficient upgrades for data centers in its IT supply chain. This addresses high-energy consumption in client and supplier operations, a key Scope 3 challenge with emissions at +56,000 tCO2eq.
The program retrofits facilities to reduce energy use by 30%, avoiding 100,000 tCO2eq annually. DBS links this to sustainability-linked loans, generating $8 million in yearly benefits through improved financing terms and ESG investor appeal.
For CFOs, this shifts operating models from compliance costs to revenue via resilient supply chains. Recent Singapore green building investments, including $1 billion for retrofits, underscore policy support enhancing loan viability.
This initiative strengthens DBS's portfolio resilience amid rising AI-driven data demands. Tan Su Shan
