Science-based targets are scaling, but impact is still concentrated where companies have control

The next frontier is Scope 3: turning value-chain ambition into financed, verified and shareable outcomes.

Science-based targets are scaling fast. However, measurable impact is still concentrated in emissions companies can directly control. The next frontier is Scope 3: turning value-chain ambition into financed, verified, and shareable decarbonization outcomes.

The concentration of progress in Scopes 1 and 2 is not a sign of low ambition. It reflects the tools available. A company can change its own fuel, its own electricity contract and its own fleet. It cannot change a supplier's furnace without a mechanism to fund the change and to receive credit for it.

That mechanism is the missing infrastructure. Insetting gives a target holder a way to co-finance the supplier's reduction, to have it verified at the source, and to have the result allocated to its inventory without double counting. Once that exists, the Scope 3 curve can start to look like the Scope 1 and 2 curves.
