About this project
The description is as the source gives it.
EDP partnered with Corporación Masaveu to convert Aboño II (Group 2) from coal to natural gas firing with readiness for hydrogen co-firing and continued use of blast furnace gases. The project repurposes EDP's own asset, reducing Scope 1 emissions through fuel switching at the Asturias site in Spain. Unit 2 became operational in July 2025 after conversion works. Evidence: "Conversion of the Aboño II thermal plant, in Spain, from coal into gas fired, expected to occur by middle of 2025 and representing an investment of mid double-digit million euros, while continuing to co-fire blast furnace gases, a case study of circular economy in Europe through the valorization of this by-product, avoiding the emission of 1 million tons of CO2/year" — https://edp.com/en/investors/investor-information/market-notifications/conversion-abono-gas-under-new-partnership-and
