About this project

The description is as the source gives it.

JR East is developing and testing the HYBARI hydrogen fuel cell hybrid train to replace diesel operations on non-electrified lines. The project involves demonstration testing on lines like Tsurumi and Nambu since March 2022, with commercialization targeted for fiscal 2030 to reduce CO2 emissions in railway operations. Evidence: "East Japan Railway Company ("JR East"), Hitachi, Ltd. ("Hitachi"), and Toyota Motor Corporation ("Toyota") have entered into an agreement to collaborate on development of test railway vehicles equipped with hybrid systems that use hydrogen powered fuel cells and storage batteries as their source of electricity." — https://global.toyota/en/newsroom/corporate/33954855.html
