ArcelorMittal signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Spanish Government in 2021 to support a €1 billion investment in decarbonization technologies, including direct reduced iron and electric arc furnace (DRI-EAF). Construction of an electric arc furnace (EAF) for long products began at the Gijón plant in 2024. The EAF is expected to commence production in the first quarter of 2026, contributing to significant CO2 emissions reductions.
