About this project
The description is as the source gives it.
The PIONEER project at Rome Fiumicino Airport implements a 2.5 MW power / 10 MWh capacity energy storage system using second-life electric vehicle batteries integrated with a 30 MW solar PV plant. It stores excess solar energy produced during the day to cover peak evening demands, provide grid flexibility services, and advance battery circular economy practices. The initiative avoids over 16,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent emissions in its first ten years of operation, supporting the airport's net-zero goals.<grok:render type="render_inline_citation"><argument name="citation_id">71</argument></grok:render><grok:render type="render_inline_citation"><argument name="citation_id">72</argument></grok:render>
