About this project
The description is as the source gives it.
The HYBRIT Demonstration project aims to revolutionize the iron and steel industry by replacing coal-based blast furnaces with direct reduction using fossil-free hydrogen produced via a 500 MW electrolyser. It will produce approximately 1.2 million tons of crude steel annually at SSAB's facilities in Oxelösund, Sweden, using sponge iron from Gällivare, potentially avoiding 14.3 Mt CO2eq emissions over the first ten years of operation. Led by SSAB, LKAB, and Vattenfall, the project supports Sweden's transition to a climate-neutral economy while maintaining high-quality steel production.
Statuses, countries and reductions are as the public source states them, and may be out of date.
